Coffee BOWL Browsing

Headline you'll never see:  When He Was a Democrat, Perry Owned Ranch Named with a Racial Slur.  Yea, doesn't really fit the narrative.

TX Dems defend Perry.  Oddly, I never heard much about Perry one way or the other when I was in TX.  By design, TX's governor is relatively weak.

Don't visit this site if you think gov't is the solution to all of our problems.

Looks like all those "Occupy _____" protests are really just fronts for public-sector unions

U.N. economist on Climate Change:  “One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy.  This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore. . .one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy.”

Did Jesus die for the Klingons?  "Christians, in particular, might take the news [of the existence of extraterrestrial life] hardest, because the Christian belief system does not easily allow for other intelligent beings in the universe. . ."  This is nonsense.  There is nothing in Christian doctrine that precludes the existence of extraterrestrial life, or their inclusion in salvation history.

Hysterical predictions of local pols prove to be. . .well. . .hysterical.  Dramatic drop in Chicago's violent crime rate after the Supremes overturn the city's gun ban

May Catholic get piercings, tattoos, etc.?  Generally speaking, I think tattoos are a bad idea for Catholics.  This is not a hill I'm willing to die on.  Piercings--other than ear piercings--also strike me as a bad idea.  Not gonna die on this hill either.  Discuss.

Great story on America's only pontifical seminary:  the Josephinum.

The Procrastinator's Creed!  Nos. 4 and 11 are my personal favs.

  1. My understanding is that only the descendants of Adam require Baptism and may receive the Eucharist. There are other rational beings, Angels. However, the rules are different for them. I'd imagine that there would be other rules for other rational beings if we encounter them.

What the Baron said. "For us men and for our salvation." I thought only the children of Adam were involved. Other rational beings can exist, but the Christ seems not to have been for them. Maybe they have Aslan.

  3. Regarding tattoos, if someone wants one they'd better be certain they can live with the sucker. I thought of getting one for over ten years before I finally did. I've no regrets either.

A few lessons I've learned from watching others who were more hasty:

    1) Never get the name of a loved one inked onto your body. One guy I knew did this after meeting the love of his life in a barracks. After getting the tattoo he found out she was less than celibate with about half the other barracks inhabitants. Not a good thing.

    2) Make sure you're not drunk or stoned when you get it and doublecheck the tattoo artist for the same.

    3) Make sure whoever does the tattoo can spell any words used correctly. I'm not kidding. It happens and provides a lot of hilarity for any who see the mistake.

    4) Don't believe you can always get a tattoo seamlessly removed with no lasting marks. I've known several men who went that route and they discovered they were only trading one scar for another.

    5) Even in this enlightened day & age, tattoos of any sort are considered indications of being "white trash".

    Just my opinion.

Also, make sure the tattoo artist is not reusing needles or ink. Hepatitis can survive outside the body for days.

  5. Are there any church laws dealing with tats and piercings on priests? It would be one thing if a priest had "MAMA" tattooed on his arm from, say, his former life in the Navy before discovering his vocation; but a priest who got tats or piercings after becoming a priest, and who openly wore earrings, nose rings, etc. would frankly creep me out.

As for others with tats, from what I have observed during my years working in the criminal justice system, successful career criminals (i.e., the ones who don't get caught) generally avoid having things like the name of their gang tattooed in gigantic letters across their foreheads.
