The homily strengthened the line of continuity between Pope Francis and
Pope Benedict; the latter was criticized for affirming, in Dominus Iesus, that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.

"the latter was criticized for affirming, in Dominus Iesus, that salvation comes only through Jesus Christ."
ReplyDeleteI would have replaced "affirming, in Dominus Iesus" with "quoting, in Dominus Iesus, the Second Vatican Council's restatement of the fundamental dogma upon which the whole of the Christian faith is based".
Some things really aren't about the pope.
Tom, I agree. Just to be clear. . .the section that starts with "The homily. . ." is a quote from another site.
DeleteRight, sorry. My comment was directed at the CWN piece, and the more general tendency, in the face of the Trope of the Radical Break, to exaggerate the similarities between the current and the previous papacy. "Hey, he consecrates bread *and* wine! Just like Benedict!"
DeleteAs for those who are celebrating the Trope, Catholics are allowed to like one pope more than another, to feel more affinity for one spirituality than another. The "Spirit of Francis's Papacy" folks who are predicting a shift toward Unitarian Universalism should be countered, not with the continuity from Benedict to Francis, but with the continuity from Peter to Francis.
I couldn't agree more that we should be highlighting the link btw Peter and Francis. I always say that the current pope is the successor to Peter not the previous occupant of his chair. However, to directly counter the false dichotomy being constructed btw BXVI and +F we need to raise every example of their obvious continuity. Drawing that line btw Peter and Francis is the cherry! :-)
DeleteThanks for the post, I think we're going to be okay...
ReplyDeleteOf course we are! The gates of Hell shall not prevail!
DeleteInteresting to learn that the Pope is a fan of liberation theology and civil unions for gay couples:

Hardly ringing endorsements there, Ludi. In both cases, it appears that he supported "less evil" versions of what was already the case. Calling him a "fan of liberation" is ridiculous, "He said Bergoglio accepted the premise of liberation theology, especially the option for the poor, but in a 'nonideological" fashion.'" I accept the premise of an option for the poor. . .big woo. Calling him a "fan of gay civil unions" is equally ridiculous. Considering that the gov't wanted to invent same-sex "marriages," supporting civil unions as an alternative was the less evil path to take. It's not like he stirred up the issue of civil unions and lobbied the gov't to legalize them.
DeleteSo, as usual: yawn.
Yawn, indeed.

A new wind is blowing...
I'm sorry, Ludi. . .just not sure what this statement from the CO bishops is supposed to tell me about +F's alleged support for same-sex civil unions. . .
