When "diversity" becomes a religion. . .

This is why you should send your kids to a small, Catholic lib arts college like the University of Dallas:

UC-San Diego is gutting several academic programs b/c of budget shortfalls.  Almost every department in the university is getting some sort of cut.

The only sacrosanct area?  "Diversity" programs/bureaucracies.

While slashing real academic programs and productive faculty, UCSD will add yet another "diversity" wonk to an already massively bloated P.C. bureaucracy:  ". . .the Chancellor’s Diversity Office, the associate vice chancellor for faculty equity, the assistant vice chancellor for diversity, the faculty equity advisors, the graduate diversity coordinators, the staff diversity liaison, the undergraduate student diversity liaison, the graduate student diversity liaison, the chief diversity officer, the director of development for diversity initiatives, the Office of Academic Diversity and Equal Opportunity, the Committee on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Issues, the Committee on the Status of Women, the Campus Council on Climate, Culture and Inclusion, the Diversity Council, and the directors of the Cross-Cultural Center, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, and the Women’s Center."

It's a religion.  Send your kids to a Catholic university.

As a fresh UCSD grad, I must say: "You are correct, sir!" Believe it or not, all of the white/Christian guilt I faced on campus actually drove me back to the sacraments..."Please, Lord, save me from my deficient Anglo-saxon/patriarchy-ridden bloodlines, for I am poor in what is ethnically different, sexually confusing and all that is holy!"

  2. I can't help but notice that UD is super predominately white. Probably less than 1% black, right? Doesn't that bother you a little bit, that the school seems to mainly attract whites at present?

These diversity initiatives are at least trying, and succeeding in many cases, to help remedy a huge problem. Surely you're not content to keep the liberal arts de facto reserved for one race?

I would be sincerely interested to know why you think UD is so lacking in diversity, and if you think that is a problem or not.

  3. Annie, I don't accept the notion that diversity per se is a good thing (nor is it a bad thing). IOW, merely having a racially diverse student body is not in and of itself desirable. If we follow the high academic admissions standards of UD and end up with a 12% black student body--great! If not, well, that's OK too. The point of a university is not to socially engineer a utopian society but to educate free citizens to govern themselves in an enlightened manner.

The mission of the University of Dallas is to educate young people in the classical, western tradition. White, black, etc. are all welcomed and taught the same material. Maybe blacks don't apply to UD b/c there aren't that many who share UD's vision of the western intellectual tradition. Maybe they don't apply b/c they don't want to live in Irving, TX. Or b/c the black Catholic population is small. Who knows? Maybe one day UD will be mostly black. Regardless, diversity (for the sake of being diverse) is not a good thing (nor is it a bad thing). If diversity results from the objective application of high academic standards, then more power to diversity! But I would never support something like an affirmative action admissions plan just to get more black kids at UD...especially if the idea is: hey, we need more black kids b/c, well, we need more black kids. No, we smart kids who want to learn the western tradition. If those kids are black, great! If not, great!
