A brief comment on Paul Ryan

(whispering). . .OK. . .I've broken out of the Squirrel Retreat House to answer a political question.

Several HancAquam readers have written to ask what I think about Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his V.P. running mate. . .

Honestly, I don't know much about Ryan.  He's Catholic.  He really riled up some LCWR-type sisters with his budget proposal in the House (cf. Nuns on a Bus).  He's pretty smart in that policy-wonkish sort of way.  He seems inoffensive at first glance.

Regular HA readers know well my thoughts on and feelings about B.O. and his crusade to transform the free citizens of America into wholly-owned wards of a leftist secular federal gov't, using the European Union as his model.  So, at this point, I'm almost one of those Anybody But Obama voters.

This doesn't mean I will support the GOP ticket.  The Republicans have their own problems when it comes to the National Security Nanny State and its endorsement of torture, imperialistic adventurism, and soft-peddling on the murder of 1.7 million American children annually.

And, yes, I've heard all the arguments about a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Obama.  Nobody ever said being an American citizen and a Roman Catholic would be easy.

(sneaking back into the retreat house. . .)

Exactly my thoughts on the GOP and on how I'd vote if I voted.

  2. Works for me. How we need the Faith to give us an outside perspective on politics.

  3. We in Massachusetts think the world is going crazy. You know when Romney was running for office in liberal Mass, Romney declared that he was a “committed” pro-choice advocate, adding, “And you will not see me wavering on that.”
Then, Romney running for Massachusetts governor in 2002, he claimed “On a personal basis, I don’t favor abortion. However, as governor of the commonwealth, I will protect a woman’s right to choose under the laws of the country and the commonwealth. That’s the same position I’ve had for many years.”
Now, running for President, he claims he's pro-life.

And don't get the people in Mass started on health care! He stuck us with it. Obama copies it. Now Romney says he'll repeal it.
    WTF???????????

    1. Faith, they are all politicians. Despite ideology, experience, philosophy, religious views, etc. . .they are first and foremost politicians. . .which is why we can never, never, never trust them to save us from ourselves. That applies to every political party in existence.

If you vote for a third, foolish party candidate and BHO wins (although Louisiana is pretty much a lock for Romney), just go ahead and feel smug and morally superior while America goes down in flames. By the way, the GOP didn't endorse torture, and waterboarding isn't torture. BHO gets a pass from all the phony torture opponents with their silence on his cowardly and immoral use of drones to assassinate rather than capture and interrogate. GWB did it the moral and manly way. You're almost right about the seeming indifference to abortion, but in some places pro-lifers are gaining traction and accomplishing results at last, such as with Arizona's restrictive law and with some personhood amendments in other states, but they are shut down almost immediately by leftist justice department agents and lawsuits by leftist phony civil rights organizations. The GOP is the best and only rational and moral choice for a faithful Catholic.

    1. On balance and "gun to my head" and only two choices available. . .I'd vote GOP in most cases. But I never vote a party line just for the sake of the party. IOW, I don't treat voting like some treat cheering for their fav football team, "I BLEED LSU purple and gold!!!" This is how we've ended up with a polarized electorate and largely indistinguishable political parties.

Both the Dems and the GOP are hurling us toward a National Security Nanny State. The only difference to my mind is that the Dems want Big Gov't in charge and the GOP wants Big Business in charge. Of course, B.G. and B.B. are largely indistinguishable these days. This is why I've become more and more libertarian in my politics.
