Cell Phone Recommendations

Since I will be in the U.S. for almost a year and half of that in parish ministry, I will need a cell phone. . .

Any suggestions for a phone using the following criteria:

Inexpensive flip phone (I am clumsy!)
No contract with a provider
Pay as you go
No data/no frills

Just a simple phone.

  1. Samsung E1130 about 40 € and it is water and dust resistant . ;-)

  2. T-mobile has the cheapest prepaid plans, since the minutes don't expire if you put a certain amount on the plan. The Samsung t139 looks good. I would make sure the areas you plan to be hand good coverage, as some parts of the US are sketchy.

It's WalMart's brand; phones run for $30, plans start at $30 month to month up to $540 for a year of service.

  6. Tracfone - inexpensive, pay as you go, available at any Walmart, and the recharge cards can be purchased at a 7-11.

  7. If the area you go to has T-mobile coverage, here is your best bet. Go to Radio Shack and pick up a pre-paid T-mobile phone (dirt cheap). Instead of buying pre-paid minutes, use T-mobile's new "Even More 500 Talk" plan for 40 bucks a month. It is just talk...no text, no web, no nothin' but talk. And if you use 500 minutes a month, it is way cheaper than "pre-paid." There is no contract and you buy your own phone. So if you buy the phone from Radio Shack and tell them when you sign up "I already have a phone" all they have to do is activate your SIM, which you'll get from Radio Shack. Up and running.

  8. The T-Mobile Pay As You Go prepaid minutes do expire after one year when you add a $100 refill. The smaller denominations expire sooner.

  9. No frills. Sounds like you want some tin cans with string.;)

  12. Another vote for Straight Talk. I haven't switched -yet- but general word from others is satisfaction. $30 monthly for a limited plan, and $45 monthly for an unlimited plan (unlimited web, text and voice, that is). No contract required. Basic flip phone is $39. Coverage/reception is as good as Verizon - which is good. You can buy your time at Walmart; also online I think.
