  1. This reminds me of a question I've had about friars and their names in religion. Some friars seem to use their given names, and others clearly have taken new names. How is a friar's name in religion decided, and at what point? Why do some keep their given names, and others don't?

  2. Anita,

The naming of novices has changed a lot over the centuries. The Old Guys tell us that they were given their names by the novice master. So, when VC2 got hijacked, they dropped those names and starting using their own.

It's always been the case that we can take religious names if we want to. The tradition was actively discouraged by most of the Baby Boomer formators. Now, almost all of the incoming novices choose a name. Usually, the novice will submit three or four names for approval and then choose one before he is vested with the habit.
