The culture of prosperity deadens us. . .

"The culture of prosperity deadens us; we are thrilled if the market offers us something new to purchase. In the meantime all those lives stunted for lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us" (Evangelii gaudium, no. 54).

 



And thus does a homiletic theme emerge for Advent. . .

Kinda made me think of the reading from Daniel today: "After this, in the visions of the night I saw the fourth beast, different from all the others, terrifying, horrible, and of extraordinary strength; it had great iron teeth with which it devoured and crushed, and what was left it trampled with its feet."

    Black Friday couldn't be more opposed to Good Friday: one glorifies the one false god, Mammon, the other, the One True God; one celebrates the god of the civil religion, the other, the God of human religion.
