Knee Doc Report

Just got back from the Knee Doc.

Verdict: moderate arthritis in my right knee, mild in my left.

Doc shows me the x-rays, "Father, you can see here and here that there's not much cushion btw the bones. . ."

Me, "Great. Only place on my body w/o enough cushioning."

Sooooo. . .who knows anything about Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate?

  1. OK, the good doctor says that studies show none of them work any better than placebo, however he has several patients who say glucosamine/condroitin sulfate really work for them....

Don't know about the first one, but about the last two apparently there are concerns regarding obesity increasing, even though my grandma has been taking them for osteoporosis for the last 2 or 3 years and (this brand) and doesn't get fat at all, quite on the contrary...

I've tried several brands and the only one that made a real difference was Move Free, any of the formulations except 'ultra' which has the least functional ingredients.

FWIW, we also give it to our guinea pigs - I crush the tablets and we sprinkle it on their food - and had an inadvertent experiment once when we ran out of the powdered stuff and I didn't get around to crushing more for a couple days. The poor eldest guinea pig went from scampering to creeping and being in obvious pain. A day or so after going back on it, he was scampering again.

  4. Some people find that they help the pain, but unless you are one of the lucky ones most of the time they are less use than anti-inflammatory drugs. 'Fraid you need to drop your weight considerably, take painkillers. and then as my Rheumatologist said to me ... come back in 15-20 years when you need a hip/knee replacement.
That's humanly speaking. Spiritually ...pray for healing or alternatively offer up the pain what ever you feel is right. I'll pray for you anyway. maryclare :-)

  5. Won't do you any harm and some people find that it helps the pain a bit but..... generally not much use - you are talking resurfacing the knees or full joint replacement realistically speaking. Sorry!!
