You have to really dig into the footnotes of several documents to find the administrative definitions for "maternal health care" and "combat AIDS," but you soon discover that they are really just talking about abortion, sterilization, and condoms. Several strongly Catholic nations, like Malta, have signed the goals with the stipulation-in-treaty that they understand 5 and 6 to exclude the anti-Catholic practices.Fr. According to the article, the campaign's goal is to support the Millenium Development Goals of the UN which are:

1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2: Achieve universal primary education
3: Promote gender equality and empower women
4: Reduce Child Mortality Rate
5: Improve maternal health
6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
7: Ensure environmental sustainability
8: Develop a global partnership for development

All of these goals seem, to my mind, quite laudable. Now the question of method is of course different, so clearly contraception and abortion could be shoehorned into these goals. But this is up to individual countries, not the UN as a whole, and the Caritas International campaign seems focused on increasing anti-poverty funding, not the other development goals.

At this point, unless there is some more concrete evidence that Caritas is supporting or promoting programs in conflict with Church teaching it seems to be a case of guilt by association. There is a need for religious organizations to engage and work with secular ones in order to have some influence. If this is what Caritas is doing then they need more support, not less. However, if there is evidence that they are disregarding Catholic morality then they need to answer for that.Matt Ghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07603153893300094147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18842286.post-48956267310445157492010-09-03T08:20:54.078-05:002010-09-03T08:20:54.078-05:00Domestic Violence laws are seriously flawed. The same is true of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Unrelated: Why doesn't the Catholic Church do anything about 'father' Michael Pfleger?
