Brownskirt Tolerance in Europe

"The Church is intolerant in principle because she believes; she is tolerant in practice because she loves. The enemies of the Church are tolerant in principle because they do not believe; they are intolerant in practice because they do not love."  — Fr. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange OP

Witness the fruits of Leftist Tolerance in Europe:

Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, Andre-Joseph Leonard is attacked by femi-Nazis* during a conference.  Note well the tolerance and love of intellectual diversity radiating from their contorted faces. You can just feel how much they want everyone to be free to just live their lives as they wish.

* Yes, femi-Nazis. Hitler's Brownshirts used exactly this sort of public intimidation to silence opposition voices.  He would send his bully-boys into pubs, theaters, universities, even private homes to start brawls so that the opposition would be forced to relent.  Worked well for him. . .for a while, anyway.

  1. What on the earth are people degenerating into? Women, supposed nurturers of the family life. Only a few decades ago, when Abp Leonard was a young man, this sort of behaviour by a woman would have been unthinkable.

Ugly ladies with too much time in their hands...I for one cringe whenever I see these stupid feminists shilling for the (inherently misogynistic) gay worldview...

    1. In fact, it's more accurate to see "the gay worldview" as a subset of feminism. While far fewer in number than gay men, lesbian feminist women are disproportionately dominant in shaping the politics of the "LGBT" demographic. And no female is more feminist than a lesbian, lemme tell ya.

Brutal intolerance is an awful thing:

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/skarlan/high-school-fires-teacher-after-her-partners-name-appeared-i

Nineteen years of dedicated service apparently means nothing to the Archdiocese of Columbus. Clearly they are living the message of the Gospel.

    1. "brutal intolerance"? Laughable. In other news, WalMart exec whines to the media b/c he was fired for stealing from his stores and giving the money to Target. Also, the president of the Human Rights Campaign was fired for publicly endorsing human trafficking. Also, the Democrat Party replaced it spokesmodel after she critized the Prez and called for his resignation.

When you work for an organization, you represent that organization. Nineteen yrs of dedicated service. . .while lying to the Church.

How nice it must be to dismiss a person's entire career with a casual wave of the hand. And please tell us why gay priests aren't immediately defrocked?

I assume when you find out a priest, or someone working for your diocese, is gay you immediately report them to the bishop and demand they be fired. Got it. If you are gay, you cannot be part of Catholic life. Such a loving and charitable charism.

    3. And how nice of you to dismiss the Church's duty to make sure that those who work for her represent her good name.

I know lots of "gay" priests. None of them have "partners." They all follow the Church's teaching on chaste celibacy. Had this teacher done the same, she'd still be teaching.

This isn't about being "gay" in the Church; she's a Methodist. It's about following your employer's rules for being an employee.

P.S. Canon Lawyer Ed Peters is toying with the idea of making this story an exam question: http://canonlawblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/26/not-a-bad-law-and-morality-final-exam/

I would work in a analogy to a man who gave nineteen years of dedicated service to the NAACP, but was discovered to be working with the KKK to perpetrate black-voter suppression.

    Such humble, generous pastoral care:

    1. Ludi, I have no idea what this story is supposed to tell us. The bishop is telling the truth of the faith. Are we supposed to think that he's being "intolerant" for doing what he vowed to do?

As a former parish cleric no longer having a dog in this fight, let me opine. I am sure the civilly married gay man sincerely believes himself to be a devout Catholic. Many, many Catholics whose lives and beliefs diverge from normative Catholic teaching do. They deny the authority of the hierarchy to define Catholicism. The "Roman Catholic Womenpriests" think they are Roman Catholics! Think of all those abortion-loving Catholic politicians. In response to the bishop's act, the man went public, used the media, a dissident Catholic pressure group AND an outside gay pressure group to shame the bishop into backing down. The note attached to the pile of petitions demanded that "faithful gay and lesbian Catholics are welcome, etc." The bishop pushed back with that same word, "faithful." Of course he was being sarcastic. If you wanna play politics, that's what you'll get.

A word on "pastoral". I grew to hate that word. Demanding a "pastoral" response usually meant coddling an immature, passive aggressive or manipulative parishioner by never saying anything that might not validate their little feelings, cause Jesus was always nice. (Did these folks never read the Gospels?) People who hated "patriarchy" suddenly demanded that I be their Nice Daddy. It was demeaning to us both.

    2. I can never quite figure out the logic of people who fight to stay in an institution that teaches truths they themselves do not believe. It's not like the RCC is the only church or employer in town. The only reason I can think of is that they stay in order to destroy from the inside. No other company, business, organization, or political party is expected to employ people who work against the goals and values of their employers. For some reason though, the RCC is expected to not only employ them but also allow them to continue undermining the mission of the Church with their dissent. Weird.

"In order to destroy from inside." From their perspective, to reform, renew and rebirth so that the Church becomes what Jesus really intended.

I think there are other reasons. One is the ingrained Catholic sense that only Catholicism is a real religion. No matter how liberal, there's something quasi-genetic in it. For some, makes it very hard to leave. A second reason is that you only get a sense of being special and alive when you are in opposition. It's no fun being the Establishment, which they'd be in the Episcopal church, for example. And a third reason: ex-Catholics are uninteresting. Look at Matthew Fox. Whilst bravely resisting Rome, he was a hero-martyr. Media loved him. Now, just another Episcopalian; so what? And he's still obsessed with Rome.

    1. Absolutely correct. It's a lot more fun/affirming to be the Rebel Inside than the Just Another Sheep. If the LCRW-type sisters (for e.g.) were to become Episcopalians they would be just like everyone else. No big woo. In fact, many of them would probably end up being more conservative than most. . .since their temperament seems to be Contrarian.

... But, his well-groomed disciples live on and move forward. It was a triumphant day for him and allies when Barbara Marx Hubbard was the keynote speaker at the LCWR this past August in St. Louis. She, being an 'ordained' gnostic bishop and now one of several leading the 'Wisdom culture', surely it was thrilling for them to see Catholic sisters dancing around her w/saffron ribbons flowing. Rev. Fox's former institution that taught his 'creation spirituality' is now Wisdom University [https://www.wisdomuniversity.org/] You are very right, they are 'obsessed with Rome', and there is a reason for it too.

And, an more recent SF Weekly article (2005):
    http://www.sfweekly.com/content/printVersion/320096/

    A quote from the article:

"In fact, this spring Fox stepped down as president of his University of Creation Spirituality, handing the reins to Jim Garrison, co-founder with Mikhail Gorbachev of the State of the World Forum, which brings world leaders together to discuss global issues. With Fox's approval, Garrison the name to Wisdom University and broadened its mandate. Eventually, there will be university affiliates worldwide and departments devoted to the wisdom and spiritual traditions of all the world's major religions. Fox will be chair of the creation spirituality department and president emeritus. Garrison plans to move creation spirituality from the school's core concept into a spoke on a much larger wheel...."
