Dominican Vestition

Here's video of the recent Vestition of the Novices that took place at St Albert the Great Priory in Irving, TX. The official start of the novitiate year begins with the postulants receiving the Dominican habit.

  1. Thanks for posting this, Fr. Philip. I always love witnessing the OP Vestition Ceremony at the Priory. It tickles my soul to see the wide-eyed faces of these men as they submit to the seemingly endless layers of the Dominican Habit. It's a beautiful sight to see their final transformation, polished with the black cappa!

Please keep these fine men in your prayers!

PS I don't recall hearing the theme from The Mission at the ceremony, though! ;)

  2. When do they get religious names?

  3. Faith,

In general the brothers choose their religious names toward the end of their novitiate (1 year) -- and during the ceremony of Profession of Simple Vows that closes the novitiate, the names are officially conferred on them. While the religious names are chosen by each individual brother, they do need to be approved by the provincial superiors.

Fr. Philip, please correct me if I'm wrong!
